Chef Bio

Natalie Brake, Victoria BC

I was lucky to be exposed to a variety of foods with amazing flavours at a young age. After a visit to my Grandmother's, I'd head home with a bundle of delicious cumin rice, butter drenched roti's and a bright yellow curry. Other times my mom would serve a piping hot, cant-wait-to eat supper of roast beef, gravy and potato's. This variety was the benefit of growing up in a multicultural familly.

However, my excitement and adoration for food really started when my health practitioner diagnosed me as pre-diabetic about 10 years ago. Knowing that some health issues could be healed and prevented with nutrition, I eagerly began caring for myself by preparing taste bud friendly, doctor friendly meals. As an artist; I used creativity to ensure that my food was beautiful looking as well as a joy to eat.

Over time my cooking skills and repertoire expanded, and I eventually graduated from one of Canada’s top Culinary Arts Programs, in Calgary Alberta. I got a variety of experience including cooking at restaurants such as River Cafe and Red Tree Catering, as well as cooking for private clients.

With a plan, long-term commitment and real action, I did eventually stabilize the pre-diabetic condition. For this reason alone I greatly respect the power of food. My success inspired me to create my ideal culinary business, Dinners by Design, which focuses on customized meals that offer convenient, healthy and creative solutions for people coping with today’s lifestyle challenges. I have recently received business training and membership through the Canadian Personal Chef’s Association.

When not cooking or eating, I spend my time with loved ones exploring the tremendous beauty all around me.
